Onlays in Schiedam: personalized restoration for a weakened tooth

Is a tooth too damaged for a regular filling but does not need to be completely covered with a crown? Then an onlay can be a good solution. At 3D Tandarts, we look at how much healthy tooth tissue can be preserved and design the onlay digitally, right at Schiedam Centrum station.

Digitally designed onlay treatment at 3D Tandarts in Schiedam

Inlay, onlay or overlay?

  • Inlay: mainly fills the inside of the tooth.
  • Onlay: covers one or more cusps of the tooth.
  • Overlay: covers almost the entire chewing surface.

These restorations are made outside the mouth, digitally (CAD/CAM) or in a dental laboratory, and then bonded to the tooth. Compared to a very large filling, they are more precise, fit better, usually last longer, and there is less chance of the tooth breaking.

Materials

We work with ceramic (such as e.max), which is beautiful, strong, and color-stable. In certain situations we use zirconium or 3D-printed composite. The dentist explains which material suits you.

Digitally designed onlays

With an intraoral scan, we digitally capture your teeth, without impression material. The design fits the shape of your tooth and how your teeth bite together.

How does the treatment proceed?

  • First appointment: examination, preparation of the tooth, scan, and a temporary filling.
  • Second appointment: fitting, checking the fit and bite, and final placement.

Onlay or crown?

An onlay restores part of the tooth and preserves more healthy tooth tissue. A crown covers the entire tooth and is needed for larger damage. The dentist assesses after examination what suits you.

What does an onlay cost?

Onlays start from €500 per tooth. The price depends on the material, complexity, and the cost of the dental laboratory. You will receive a clear estimate in advance. For adults, onlays are only reimbursed through supplementary dental insurance.
